the academy traditionally has experienced itself as the official industry of knowledge sanctioned by god - the secular divinity gradually replacing the religious one - but this officiality is decreasingly recognized and in the past two decades the gap between the reality and its selfperception has become embarrassing - this is why the academy is getting attacked from all sides - left right centre up down and the sideways spots - but - and this is the crux of the thesis - its only responding in the traditional ways - according to assumptions of its placement and superiority which are no longer valid - which only serve to exacerbate the problem
